It has been a while

I haven't posted here in a while and mainly it is because when I was on break I did not want to think about anything. I went comatose for a few weeks! Anyways, I am now in the second week of my second semester. Can you say WOW? Cram is all I can say about this semester. Cram it all in and retain it. I have a wonderful teacher but man oh man am I in for it.
I had my first week of clinical at my new hospital this week. Ten hour days are harsh but nothing compared to the 12 hour days I will soon be facing I know. This hospital is the county hospital and I must say it is NICE. The staff are amazing and the interns are amusing and the patients are unbelievable. I know now why nurses become so darn cynical! For instance I got a patient today that came to our floor with a 28 week intrauterine pregnancy and in sickle cell crisis. Understandably so she is in extreme pain that could not be managed well due to her pregnancy and the fact she was allergic to almost everything we could safely give her. So our only choice was Vicodin q6h. She was ANGRY to say the least. She made it well known she was not happy. She answered all assessment questions with "I want to go home". Mind you this is her fourth pregnancy and she is 23. Can you say birth control? Anyways, she refused to answer any questions, complained about the hospital, then got down right dirty and pulled the blankets over her head. So I told her that she needed to allow me to do my job or sign out AMA. No way around it. She agreed to sign out AMA even after I explained that she putting her life at risk as well as the life of her baby. She needed the fluids, antibiotics and pain meds so she did not get any worse. So she was given the form. I told her to call for a ride home. Do you think anyone in her family was going to come get her? No way! So she then refused to speak to anybody. I swear she was in a full on temper tantrum that reminds me of my seven year old mentally impaired son! Anyway, I played nice nurse and continued to coax her and she finally agreed to pain meds and phenergan for the N&V. GEESH. That was like 2.5 hours of my day wasted. I need to go study for an exam we have but I will update more as we go.

CIAO!!

My mom has had so many stories like that. She works up here at Roseville Sutter where I had Kaylee. I hear all kinds of interesting things. Being a nurse you have to have a lot of patience.
