IV Starts
I am a big baby! My lab partner tried 2 times to start an IV on me and I had to have her stop. I do not like pain that is not needed! She was doing well and I am sure I made it worse on her by wiggling and essentially freaking out. STUPID! Oh well. I had a great day with it. I did one successful venous puncture and I complete "ready to go to OR" IV start (on the first try). What did I learn? BE AGGRESSIVE!! I was trying to hard to be gentle to my guy (Dan) that I wound up fishing for a vein. Stab and go is the way to be. What can I say; I am a baby vampire and my blood letting skills need practice. For the sake of my patients I am thankful that we practice on each other. A bit a humility goes a long way too. After watching the nurses try 5 times to get an IV in Jonathan (blowing his veins each time) I thought I had learned enough to do just fine. Yeah Right. Thankfully our skills lab instructor was patient and firm with us. Never forget difference between sterile and clean. I wasted 2 needles by not following sterile technique and those puppies are expensive!
I do have to say that I am a gluten for punishment though. After skills lab was out I ran to the Nursing office to get a free flu shot. I am glad I got it but my arm hurts :( I am going to go scrub my kitchen floor in BIG circles to move that fluid out of my muscle!
About Jonathan, he had a bad strain of e-coli. Here is some info on it. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/escherichiacoli_g.htm
Prayer saved my child's life! No doubt about it. I am shocked at how much is happening with his little body. I have been told many times that there is a calling on his life to be in the service of God and if that is true then Satan is doing ALL he can to destroy that promise. I am thankful that my church prayed without ceasing for him. I am thankful for the people that came and prayed for him. Sometimes I question my faith and then things like this happen that make the questions end.
My rotation in OR was uneventful last week. I was utterly bored as a OR Nurse. I do not think I will start my career off there. I really like patient care. After all this is why I am doing this. Not to have people knocked out cold on a OR table and listen to the surgeon or anesthesiologist yack about their fishing trips or dogs. I was told that I am "Miss Nancy Nice Nurse" and that OR probably wasn't the place for me. Ya think? Oh well. I am back to med-surg tomorrow and I am looking forward to a patient that I can work with. Total care or not I really like this right now.
Okay I have been long winded enough. I may be avoiding my kitchen floor but Emma is sleeping and Jonathan is playing in the back yard leaves ( half day for him) so I must go.
Ta Ta for now!
